What To Eat Before Race Day

What you eat before a race doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, the simpler it is, the better most runners feel. Race week is not the time to experiment or chase perfect nutrition.

It’s about giving your body what it already knows how to use.

Stick With Familiar Foods

The best race-day food is food you’ve already eaten many times before.

That usually means:

  • Carbohydrates you digest well
  • Moderate protein
  • Low fat and fiber

Bland isn’t boring here. It’s predictable, and predictability is what keeps your stomach calm.

Eat Enough, But Don’t Overdo It

You don’t need to stuff yourself to “load up.” Eating normally with a little extra carbohydrate is enough for most people.

Big, heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish or uncomfortable.

The Morning Of The Race

On race morning, aim for something simple that you’ve practiced.

That might be:

  • Toast or a bagel
  • Oatmeal
  • A banana
  • Peanut butter or honey

The goal is to top off energy, not to feel full.

Don’t Overdo The Water

Hydration matters, but forcing large amounts of fluid can backfire. Sip water or a familiar sports drink and let your body guide you.

The Big Picture

Race-day fueling works best when it’s boring and familiar. When you trust what you’ve practiced, you remove one more source of stress from an already important day.
